Rates of Stemwood Carbon Accumulation Are Linked to Hydroclimate Variability in Mexican Conifers

چکیده

Evapotranspiration demand has increased rapidly as temperatures have risen, affecting forest productivity. Consequently, carbon (C) uptake by forests is being modified; therefore, a more refined knowledge of the relationships between C capture and hydroclimate variability required, particularly in drought-prone regions. In this study, we analyzed climate stemwood through dendroecological analyses radial growth 15 conifer species distributed along broad bioclimatic gradient Mexico. The content was calculated using densitometry data; correlations mixed models were then used to determine influence climatic variables (precipitation, mean maximum minimum temperatures, SPEI drought index) on tree growth. Each showed specific responses with Taxodium mucronatum most responsive species. Both precipitation temperature best explained changes capture, playing secondary roles. winter before period important season for positive wet-cool conditions. However, influences current fall summer also notable. Seasonal implications productivity face severe droughts that repeatedly affect study region.

Western Pacific hydroclimate linked to global climate variability over the past two millennia

Interdecadal modes of tropical Pacific ocean-atmosphere circulation have a strong influence on global temperature, yet the extent to which these phenomena influence global climate on multicentury timescales is still poorly known. Here we present a 2,000-year, multiproxy reconstruction of western Pacific hydroclimate from two speleothem records for southeastern Indonesia. The composite record sh...

Mexican conifers differ in their capacity to face climate change

The recent massive dieback of forest trees due to drought stress makes assessment of the variability of physiological traits that might be critical for predicting forest response and adaptation to climate change even more urgent. We investigated xylem vulnerability to cavitation and xylem specific hydraulic conductivity in seven species of three principal conifer genera (Juniperus monticola, Ju...

Divergent phenological response to hydroclimate variability in forested mountain watersheds.

Mountain watersheds are primary sources of freshwater, carbon sequestration, and other ecosystem services. There is significant interest in the effects of climate change and variability on these processes over short to long time scales. Much of the impact of hydroclimate variability in forest ecosystems is manifested in vegetation dynamics in space and time. In steep terrain, leaf phenology res...

Soil Fungal:Bacterial Ratios Are Linked to Altered Carbon Cycling

Despite several lines of observational evidence, there is a lack of consensus on whether higher fungal:bacterial (F:B) ratios directly cause higher soil carbon (C) storage. We employed RNA sequencing, protein profiling and isotope tracer techniques to evaluate whether differing F:B ratios are associated with differences in C storage. A mesocosm (13)C labeled foliar litter decomposition experime...
